Why a Kiln?
The kiln is an important piece of the puzzle. What are the downsides of using raw materials that have not been milled? You don’t know what is inside of them!
Short of x-rays, it is tough to determine if there are insects or larvae nesting in the materials. Often debarking helps, but most insects live in the inner bark, feeding off of the cambium. Assuming there could be critters, your can either treat the logs with chemicals that kill the insects when wood is ingested or you can heat-treat the materials. For obvious reasons, kiln sterilizing the logs would eliminate the handling and use of pesticides. But can I build a kiln that will do the job?
